DCSF: Children Accommodated in Secure Children's Homes at 31 March 2009: England and Wales

DescriptionThis SFR gives statistics on children accommodated in secure children's homes at 31 March 2009 and includes data from England and Wales. The SFR includes information on places approved, and children accommodated by sex, age, length of stay and type of placement.

The latest statistics update those previously released on 24 July 2008.

The key points from this release are:
  • 290 children were accommodated in secure children's homes in England and Wales at 31 March 2009 - 275 in England and 15 in Wales. This represents a rise of 4 per cent on the 2008 total of 280.
  • The number of secure children's homes, open at 31 March 2009 in England and Wales, is 19, the same number as in 2008.
  • At 31 March 2009, there were 340 approved places in these 19 secure children's homes open in England and Wales.
  • 86 per cent of approved places were occupied. This represents an increase from 2008 when the occupancy rate was 81 per cent.
